The World of Science Reveals the Principles of Nature
Creating Tomorrow’s Science through a Wide Range of Science Education and Research

Science is a discipline that seeks to reveal the structure of the natural world and explain mysterious phenomena and riddles. Genomic analysis, environmental conservation, computational finance and other forms of advanced science can only solve problems through cooperation between various different fields. Broad knowledge in science forms a foundation of this capability.

The Faculty of Science is comprised of five departments: mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and information sciences. Students acquire a deep understanding of the theories and knowledge that represent the collective wisdom of humanity, cultivate a heart ready to take on the challenge of new puzzles, and learn the methods necessary to explore new areas. This education fosters strengths that can be applied in many different areas of humanity and nature. The campus offers joint education research facilities that cover everything from traditional disciplines to the latest cutting-edge research, and students have ready access to this vast range of scientific fields. Built upon a 140-year-old tradition of fostering female talents in the field of science—including many professionals, scientists and educators—the Faculty of Science continues to educate and support excellent female talents in scientific fields recognized by everyone, with the goal of contributing to society.

Cultivating Science Experts

As mentioned above, Ochanomizu University’s Faculty of Science offers courses in five areas as entry points to science (mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and information sciences). There are five specialized departments offering specialized education in each respective field. The educational programs of each department are designed to cultivate people with the advanced specialized knowledge that society demands in their respective fields.

A Diversified Educational System

Ochanomizu University’s specialized education system is characterized by an excellent multiple program elective course system that enable students to both deepen their specializations and diversify their studies. In the case of the Faculty of Science, students enter one of the five departments. If they want to concentrate on the pursuit of one specialized field of knowledge and deepen their expertise, they study in their chosen department’s main program, and then the supplemental program offered by that same department. Those who want to learn broadly about many different scientific fields to attain specialized knowledge in a diverse range of sciences can attain a solid core proficiency in one department’s main program, and then select a secondary program offered by another department. Students can also select an interdisciplinary program developed through cooperation between experts in multiple fields, thereby achieving a specialty not available in any existing field.

In parallel with these programs, students can broaden their specialties using a unique graduation research shift option the Faculty of Science offers. This allows students to conduct their graduate research under the instruction of a teacher from a department other than their own. Many students are already studying under this system, taking on the challenges of developing their own new specialties.

Education That Lets Each Individual Shine

Teachers in the Ochanomizu University Faculty of Science are readily available to students. The small-class courses (lectures) make it possible for instructors to check the participation and responsiveness of students. The Faculty of Science’s educational programs offer a great deal of practical training and seminars, and these courses also provide concentrated instruction with small class sizes. The faculty also provides a full range of equipment for practical training purposes, and students can conduct experiments to their heart’s content. The overriding principle of Ochanomizu University’s Faculty of Science is “do your experiments for yourself.” Thanks to this policy, students have many opportunities to handle cutting-edge equipment themselves.

Fully Equipped Facilities

The Faculty of Science also offers fully equipped facilities that support both education and research. Examples include the Information, Media and Education Square, which operates and supports information processing systems; the Marine and Coastal Research Center, which serves as a frontline base for research into marine life and the environment; the Center for Instrumental Analysis, which manages and operates large-scale equipment used to foster material science and life science research; and the Ubiquitous Computing Test House (Ocha House), which examines the use of computers in the home. Facilities such as the Radioisotope Research Center and the Genetic Engineering Laboratory provide strong support for Faculty of Science activities. Many other different research centers are available, and students can achieve a deeper level of specialization by participating on the frontlines of actual research.

In addition, the faculty collaborates with various national research institutes and many other domestic and international universities, providing education and research from an even broader perspective.

The Headwaters for Female Talent in Scientific Fields

Ochanomizu University’s Faculty of Science serves as the headwaters for female talent in scientific fields, and has sent many advanced specialists, scientists and educators into society who have taken on cutting-edge roles. Many students go on to graduate school after completing their undergraduate degrees. A high percentage of graduates in both the undergraduate and graduate courses obtain a wide range of jobs in their desired areas.

In addition, a large number of graduates continue to participate in education at the Faculty of Science as teachers. Students are able to polish their abilities because these graduates serve as role models in science as well as being active women pursuing their careers.
